The 2nd Workshop on Illnesses and Occupational Diseases was organized by the Turkish Shipowners Employers’ Union (TAİS) with the participation of sector representatives on May 21, 2024, to evaluate the illnesses and occupational deases occupied in Turkish Fleet with root cause analysis and proposals.
The workshop began with an opening speech by Mr. Ali İbrahim Kontaytekin, Chairman of the TAİS Board of Directors. Following this, presentations were made by Aslı Arslan Demirkıran, a board member of the Turkish Maritime Federation (TÜRDEF), and A. Yaşar CANCA, Chairman of the Chamber of Marine Engineers (GEMİMO).
The workshop was conducted in three sessions.
In the first session, Dr. Esra BAŞKAN, Lecturer at Özyeğin University Faculty of Law, addressed the topic of “Evaluation of the llnesses and Occupational Diseases of Seafarers in terms of Occupational Health and Safety and within the scope of the MLC.” Following this, Mr. Murat BİNGÜL and Burcu Kula AKBAŞ from the EKOL Maritime Training Center continued the workshop with their presentations titled “Professional Interview Processes and MMPI Test Application in Maritime Sector Recruitment.” Dr. Serpil ÖZER, Workplace Physician at ARKAS Holding, discussed “The Distinction between Work-Related Diseases and Occupational Diseases in the Maritime Sector.”
In the second session, Oruç Reis GÜVEN, Advisor to the Board of Directors of GÜNGEN Maritime, presented on “Administrative Problems Caused by Diseases Seen in Seafarers.” Captain Fatih SANA, a lecturer at Ordu University Fatsa Faculty of Marine Sciences, discussed “Psychological Problems Faced by Seafarers During Their Working Lives.” Ural ÇAĞRICI, President of the Maritime Workers Solidarity Association (DAD-DER), provided information on the “Seafarer Health Report/Record System Received by Filipino and Indian Seafarers from Their Countries.”
Mr. İrfan METE, President of the Turkish Seafarers’ Union (TDS), addressed the “Difficulties Faced by Seafarers as a Result of Diseases and Occupational Diseases.” Finally, Dr. Bekir Lütfi ÇELEPÇİKAY, Director General of Borders and Coastal Health, presented on “Evaluation of the Health System for Seafarers in Turkey within the National and International Legislation Framework,” leading into the final session.
The final session was conducted in a Q&A format, after which the workshop concluded.
Plaques were presented to the participants who made presentations by Mr. Ali İbrahim Kontaytekin.
